Maverick's

Last Stand

In World War II, Hitler, the mastermind of the Nazi Empire, conquered almost the entire continent of Europe. In 1943, he had taken control of the entire continent and soon after,  he had made plans for the domination of the United States. When U.S. intelligence received word of this, they called for their best special operative, David North, code named Maverick.

This was to be a solo mission, as were all the missions Maverick was assigned. Maverick was flown in by a Nazi cargo plane that had been stolen by the Americans earlier in the war. Maverick’s objective was simple: To kill Adolph Hitler before he announces his plans and to also find and bring the plans back to the rendezvous site. He was to use any means necessary to complete his mission. Maverick had to parachute down to the base of the Alps and Hitler’s base was only a few clicks north. When Maverick landed on the ground, he immediately radioed a command unit that was in a small abandoned building not far from where he was.

"This is Maverick. Come in base." Maverick whispered.

A staticy voice replied. "This is base, we read you Mav."

"Is that you General?" Maverick asked smiling.

"Yes, Maverick. I will be in charge of this op." The General said.

"Sir, I am headed to Hitler’s base now."

"Good," the General said with enthusiasm "the best way there is to go through a back entrance. It is about one click west of your position. It’s lightly guarded, but be careful."

"Yes sir." Maverick said.

"Maverick?" The General asked.

"Yes sir?"

"Some of my boys left you some equipment and it should be about ten feet east from where you are now."

" Okay, Maverick out." Maverick said as he turned off his radio. Maverick found the equipment stored in a small wooden crate. In it he found a dismantled rifle and a silenced high-powered magnum. Maverick also found a thermal vest that he would need starting right now because it had just started to snow. He put it on over his black combat suit, picked up the backpack full of supplies and headed for the back entrance to the base.

Maverick reached the back entrance in under twenty minutes. There were only two guards and Maverick easily killed them both thanks to years of combat training from the U.S. military. Maverick had taken the clothes off of the Nazi Sergeant and now he could easily move through the corridor to the base. He climbed up a ladder that led to the outside of the base and he looked around for a diversion to escape. He saw a propane tank, a truck filled with weaponry and a very large M-1 tank. Maverick casually pulled out a timed explosive and swiftly walked to the propane tank. An exhausted guard making his rounds around the perimeter saw Maverick standing next to the propane tank.

"Stop!" He shouted in a thick German accent. "What are you doing?

Maverick gave the guard a hard look and in perfect German he said, "Private, I’m taking a leak. Get back to your patrol!"

"Yes Sir!" The guard said realizing that he was a Sergeant.

Maverick was actually setting the explosive he had and he had given himself ten minutes to find Hitler and the plans. ‘Plenty of time’ Maverick thought as he finished the timing and started to walk towards the base.

Maverick made his way into the base. The inside looked more like a museum than a military base. It had old paintings, parchments, and hundreds of old historical artifacts. As Maverick walked through the museum-like military base, he overheard a conversation between two soldiers that Hitler was going to make an announcement. Maverick was suddenly pushed into a small room with other Nazi commanders. Maverick looked around for an American turned Nazi, Victor Creed, who was Hitler’s right hand man for dealing with the Americans. He found him sitting next to a small podium. As they all stood crowded into this room, a Nazi general whispered into Maverick’s ear that Hitler was off relieving himself.

‘Perfect!’ Maverick thought leaving the small room. He entered the restroom about twenty feet away from the small room. There were only three stalls and Maverick checked each of them by looking on the floor under the metal walls that concealed the toilets. Hitler was in the last stall. Maverick kicked the stall door open.

"Who the hell are you?" Hitler asked in German.

"My name is Maverick," Maverick said with an evil grin. "and YOU are dead."

Maverick pulled out his silenced magnum and fired. Hitler’s blood and brains flew onto the back wall. Maverick looked at the evil man that lay dead in front of him. Without having time to think of his next move, his explosives erupted outside creating a giant mushroom cloud of smoke and fire. "That is my cue to exit." Maverick thought until he remembered the plans he should have gotten off of Hitler. He went back and searched Hitler’s bloody body and found the disk which contained the plans he wanted. Very cautiously he started to leave the restroom. All of a sudden, he started to get pushed around by the confused and terrified Nazi commanders that were gathered in the small room.

"Damn Nazi’s!" Maverick thought to himself as he picked himself up off of the ground.

"Help me….Help me!" a woman’s voice called from the distance. Maverick knew he had to get out of there but he couldn’t ignore the cry. Maverick looked around for the woman that was calling to him and he found a blond woman lying on the floor. She must have been trampled by the Nazi commanders as they were coming after me.

"Please help me…please" she pleaded.

She started coughing and spitting up blood. Maverick couldn’t just let her die there so he picked her up and carried her outside and down to the underground corridor to freedom.

Maverick and the blonde woman were air lifted to the command unit’s position. She was medically treated and then questioned briefly. Much to Maverick’s surprise, she was an American and she too was an operative. Her name was Rachel Cassidy and she was also working on a mission but exactly which mission was not being discussed. Maverick was getting a strange vibe from this woman…he couldn’t quite put his finger on what was bothering him about her. He tried to get some information from his old commander, The General, but he wouldn’t talk about who she was or what her mission was about. Maverick decided to do a little investigating on his own.

One night as Maverick looked through his files on special operatives, Rachel entered the room and startled him.

"You’re still up?" she said.

"Yes, I can’t sleep." He says as he slowly closes the files.

As Rachel closes the door behind her, she says to Maverick,

"I need to show you something."

Maverick sat on the corner of his desk and asks, "What is it?"

Just then Rachel Cassidy transforms into a red haired, blue skinned, gorgeous woman. Maverick thought she was a spy. He reaches for his gun and aims it at the woman he thought was Rachel Cassidy.

"Who are you?"

"You’re not surprised at my new appearance?" she asks.

"I’ve seen worse. Why should I be surprised?" Maverick says very calmly.

Ignoring the question, the blue skinned woman explained her appearance. Her real name was Raven Darkholm. This was actually her natural look but she could morph into other people. She doesn’t know ‘how’ she does it, it just happens, but it does help her in her work as an operative.

"I want to keep this a secret until we get to the states." She says.

"The states?" Maverick asks in wonder.

"Didn’t the General tell you?" Darkholm asks as she’s transforming into Rachel Cassidy again.

"We leave tomorrow."

The next day they were both on a large heliplane headed for the United States. In the morning before they left, The General said that Maverick was assigned to a new, very hush-hush mission. Only the very best CIA operatives were involved and that’s all he was to know about it now. He

would get more information back at the CIA headquarters.

After a long flight, the heliplane landed on the roof of the CIA Headquarters in New York. Maverick and Darkholm were escorted by two military police officers into a dark conference room. Already seated in the room were three men. The one seated at the head of the table looked to be in his late forties, showing some gray in his hair and wearing an eye patch over his left eye. By the way he was dressed, he looked to be a military man of extreme importance. The other two men sat in chairs on opposite sides of the large table. The man on the left seemed to be very short and stocky. He wore a leather jacket with Levi jeans and rattlesnake cowboy boots. It was quite an unusual look and Maverick had to do all he could to keep himself from laughing out loud. Maverick instantly recognized the third man and he immediately pulled out his gun and pointed it at him.

"Creed! What are you doing here?" Maverick shouted.

Before Creed could respond, the old man with the eye patch interrupted, "Put the gun away and sit down."

"But sir…" Maverick tried to explain why he pulled out his gun.

"Shut up" the older man said. "I will do the explaining."

Maverick sat down and quietly waited for the explanation.

"As most of you know, I am Commander Fury. You have been called here because you are the best operatives we have. Unfortunately, you all are not here on your merits. The Nazi’s have stolen a virus from us. The virus is extremely dangerous!"

"What is so dangerous about this virus sir?" Darkholm asked leaning on the wall near the door.

"This is what we know…"

After this briefing, they were transported by a sub into East Germany. They were supposed to steal back this virus that the Nazi’s were holding. The virus was code named, the Legacy Virus. The German’s had called it that because it was supposed to be the legacy of Hitler (before Maverick had killed him). The virus was altered by the Germans and now it was able to kill anyone who was Jewish. This mission was especially dangerous for Maverick because he was half German and half Jewish.

Maverick, Creed, Logan, and Darkholm were all torpedoed out of the sub. They had swum for about fifteen minutes when they arrived at the northeast side of Germany, about 900 miles from Berlin. When they surfaced, they were met by a small army of German soldiers.

"Don’t move!" one of the Nazi soldiers shouted.

Maverick and the team threw up their hands and froze, not moving a muscle because they knew what the consequences would be if they did. All of them were transported to a highly secured nazi military facility. Logan, Creed and Darkholm were all chained and put in prison cells. Maverick was not taken to a cell but instead, he was tortured for information. Maverick was restrained to a stainless steel table where he was beaten with a sledgehammer. He screamed in pain but his cries of pain were over shadowed by the loud command given by one of the interrogators.

"Give him a shot of the Legacy Virus!"

The Nazi scientist followed the command and injected Maverick with the virus. As soon as the needle was pulled out of Maverick’s arm, the door to the laboratory blew in. part of the shrapnel of the door flew into one of the guard’s eyes, blinding him. Maverick looked up from the steel table and saw Darkholm standing in the shattered doorway.

"Die American Bitch!" The scientist said as he attacked her with a scalpel he had grabbed from his operating tray. Darkholm ducked down to her knees dodging the scalpel and then she tackled him to the wall knocking him unconscience. She quickly moved to the steel table where Maverick lay.

"Oh my God, what did they do to you Maverick?"

"It’s not as bad as it looks." He says as blood rolled down the side of his face from the edge of his mouth. "I will be fine."

"Come on, let’s get out of this hell hole." Darkholm shouts.

As they exit the lab, more guards come but before they enter into the room, Darkholm has transformed into the scientist that she has just knocked unconscious. When the guards enter the room, she tells them to put Maverick inside an armored truck so he can be moved to a nearby field and shot. The guards do as they are told and Darkholm , the transformed scientist, then transforms into a German guard and proceeds to walk to the truck and tell the other guards that she will be transporting the prisoner. She has to make it look real so she needs to ask another guard to come along. She looks around and sees a very pitiful, tall, thin German soldier standing and staring as if he didn’t know what he was supposed to be doing.

"You!" she cries out, still posing as the German guard.

"Me?" the pitiful soldier asks.

"Yes. Accompany me to take this prisoner out to the field."

"Yes Sir!" as he walks quickly towards the passenger door and gets inside.

As soon as the truck leaves the base and they are out of sight from the other soldiers, Darkholm stops the truck. She didn’t actually need another soldier to help her so she needs to get rid of him. She turns toward him in the cab of the truck and looks sharply at him.

"Why have we stopped?" he asks in a shaky voice.

Darkholm just smiles and then slams her right leg into his throat and with the other foot, kicks the side of his head and instantly, and without pain, breaks his neck. She pushes his lifeless body out of the passenger door and pealed out on the concrete road toward the harbor where their transport would be waiting for them.

Darkholm and Maverick safely make it to the transport where Maverick receives his medical attention. Unfortunately, Logan and Creed aren’t so lucky but Maverick doesn’t know anything about them at this point. They finally reach the United States again and immediately Maverick is put into the hospital in critical condition. Darkholm stayed by his side throughout the transport.

"Hey Maverick" she whispers. "How you feelin’?"

"Like a ton of bricks fell on my chest."

"More like sledge hammers" she says with a slight little laugh.

"Where are the others?" Maverick asks.

Darkholm pauses for a moment and then answers, "Logan and Creed were probably captured and are most likely dead by now." "Come on now,

try to rest and get yourself better. The doctors told me that you have an unknown virus in your bloodstream and it is trying to destroy your cells, one at a time."

"It’s the virus….the one we were supposed to get and bring back." Maverick says, now fully awake.

"What are you going to do now Maverick?" Darkholm asks, feeling very down and depressed.

"There’s nothing I can do except live with it for as long as my body can hold out in whatever time I have left."

"That sounds like a good start to a new, relaxing life Maverick" Darkholm says with tears running down her face as she’s holding Maverick’s hand. " ….a very good start."
